Safety First!
Before you even think about changing the tire, safety is paramount. Pull over to a safe location, away from traffic. Turn on your hazard lights. If possible, park on a level surface.
What You'll Need:
- Spare tire (inflated!)
- Jack
- Lug wrench
- Owner's manual (to locate jack points)
- Gloves (optional)
- Wheel wedges (optional, but recommended)
Step-by-Step Tire Change Guide:
- Engage the parking brake: Make sure the vehicle is securely parked.
- Apply wheel wedges: Place wheel wedges behind the wheels opposite the flat tire.
- Loosen the lug nuts: Use the lug wrench to loosen the lug nuts on the flat tire. Don't remove them completely, just break them free.
- Position the jack: Consult your owner's manual for the correct jacking points on your vehicle's frame.
- Raise the vehicle: Slowly raise the vehicle with the jack until the flat tire is off the ground.
- Remove the lug nuts: Now, completely remove the lug nuts and set them aside in a safe place.
- Remove the flat tire: Carefully pull the flat tire straight off the wheel studs.
- Mount the spare tire: Align the spare tire with the wheel studs and push it onto the hub.
- Install the lug nuts: Hand-tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern.
- Lower the vehicle: Lower the vehicle with the jack until the spare tire is touching the ground, but the full weight of the car is not on it.
- Tighten the lug nuts: Fully tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern with the lug wrench.
- Lower the vehicle completely: Lower the vehicle completely and remove the jack.
- Give the lug nuts a final check: Double-check that all the lug nuts are tightened securely.
